Informal Language and Its Relationship to the Acquisition of Twitter Followers

    Get PDF
This paper argues that increased use of Informal Language in an organization's Tweets will increase their number of Followers on Twitter. An unobtrusive content analysis was conducted on approximately 12,000 Tweets authored by 18 academic institutions, all members of the iSchools organization, in order to extract instances of Informal Language. The findings suggest that Informal Language is an effective means of communication in the context of Twitter, and imply more broadly that conforming to the conventions established by any social media platform is an effective means of increasing presence and influence in a given medium

Genetic colour variation visible for predators and conspecifics is concealed from humans in a polymorphic moth

The definition of colour polymorphism is intuitive: genetic variants express discretely coloured phenotypes. This classification is, however, elusive as humans form subjective categories or ignore differences that cannot be seen by human eyes. We demonstrate an example of a 'cryptic morph' in a polymorphic wood tiger moth (Arctia plantaginis), a phenomenon that may be common among well-studied species. We used pedigree data from nearly 20,000 individuals to infer the inheritance of hindwing colouration. The evidence supports a single Mendelian locus with two alleles in males: WW and Wy produce the white and yy the yellow hindwing colour. The inheritance could not be resolved in females as their hindwing colour varies continuously with no clear link with male genotypes. Next, we investigated if the male genotype can be predicted from their phenotype by machine learning algorithms and by human observers. Linear discriminant analysis grouped male genotypes with 97% accuracy, whereas humans could only group the yy genotype. Using vision modelling, we also tested whether the genotypes have differential discriminability to humans, moth conspecifics and their bird predators. The human perception was poor separating the genotypes, but avian and moth vision models with ultraviolet sensitivity could separate white WW and Wy males. We emphasize the importance of objective methodology when studying colour polymorphism. Our findings indicate that by-eye categorization methods may be problematic, because humans fail to see differences that can be visible for relevant receivers. Ultimately, receivers equipped with different perception than ours may impose selection to morphs hidden from human sight.Peer reviewe

Green Entrepreneurship: An Opportunity for Entrepreneurial Development in Nigeria

    Get PDF
The environment is very important to human existence, and entrepreneurship on the other hand is known to be vital in economic development. In as much as entrepreneurship is of great importance, it is necessary for enterprising individuals and firms to consider the effects and impacts of their business operations on the environment; this leads to the concept of Green entrepreneurship, green economy, sustainability and eco-friendly products, services and marketing. The green economy became a UNEP agenda since the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio +20) held in June 2012; countries are encouraged to take advantage of the transition to the green economy which offers huge economic opportunities for entrepreneurship. For this purpose, this study looked at the concept of green entrepreneurship with the view of the opportunities it offers for entrepreneurial development in Nigeria. An exploratory approach was adopted in this study which involves the review and analysis of various research works on green economy and entrepreneurship; and the findings indicate that most developed and even some developing countries have worked hard on their compliance to green requirements according to UNEP. Considering Nigeria‟s compliance, the study recommends that much needs to be done regarding environmental sustainability, green economy and green entrepreneurship

Applying Mixed-Effects Location Scale Modeling to Examine Within-Person Variability in Physical Activity Self-Efficacy

    Get PDF
Abstract: Background: Physical activity self-efficacy is conceptualized as a construct that is changeable and responsive to contextual factors. The current study applied mixed-effects location scale modeling to examine within-person variability in physical activity self-efficacy among middle-aged and older adults (N = 14 adults, mean age = 59.4 years) who were attempting behavior change. Methods: An electronic diary was used to record self-reported self-efficacy and physical activity via Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) twice a day (2:00 pm and 9:00 pm). Data from weeks 1-6 were analyzed using a Mixed-Effects Location Scale Model in SAS PROC NLMIXED. Results: Participants differed from each other in the degree to which physical activity self-efficacy varied from day to day (p = .03). Within-person variation in self-efficacy was negatively related to levels of brisk walking each week (p = .002), and decreased over time (p = .03). Conclusions: Preliminary results suggest that fluctuations in self-efficacy may be as important for predicting short-term behavior as the overall or mean level of self-efficacy

The Chaco is an international biome, connecting four countries: Paraguay (230,000 km2), Bolivia (90,000 km2), Argentina (520,000 km2), and Brazil (Mato Grosso do Sul state (MS), with around 9,000 km2 and in the middle of South America. Brazilian Chaco is restricted to Porto Murtinho region, MS. The daisies (Asteraceae) with near 24,000 species worldwide is characterized by herbs and shrubs that coevolved with several taxa of endophagous insects: dipterans Agromyzidae, Ceciidomyidae and Tephritidae; Coleoptera (Apionidae), Hemiptera (Miridae), Lepidoptera (Blastobasidae, Gelechiidae, Pterophoridae, Pyralidae, and Tortricidae) and the parasitoids of this endophagous insects, which found in the daisies’s flower heads ideal conditions for food, breeding site and shelter. The Neotropical florivorous flies are the Agromyzinae (Agromyzidae), and Tephritinae (Tephritidae), which in their larval stage feed on Asteraceae inflorescences. To report the species of florivore flies, their host plants and parasitoids in flower heads of Asteraceae from the Brazilian Chaco, we sampled inflorescences of 25 species (± 500 flower heads/species) that were kept in containers to the emergence of the florivorous flies or their parasitoids sampled in the three phytophysiognomies. The adult insects after 48 hours of their emergence were fixed in 80% ethanol for later identification. A total 25 species of Asteraceae were evaluated in the Brazilian Chaco, being collected 17,000 flower heads. Nine tribes of two Asteraceae subfamilies were sampled, from which 15 species of florivorous flies were recovered. We found 5 genera with 9 of Tephritinae (Tephritidae), 6 species of Melanagromyza (Agromyzinae, Agromyzidae), and 104 parasitoids (Hymenoptera) of the florivorous flies
